The Youngstown Mattress Comapny Arts Center is a turn of the century cold storage warehousw located on the western edge of downtown Youngstown. Erected in 1900 by owner Silas Shook, aprominent farmer and merchant, the building warehoused goods behind a store frontin Federal Street and the Mahoning River. At Shook's death in 1935, the property converted to Anna Adams. In 1949 it became known as the Ohio Trading Post, a second hand store. The storefront was razed in 1951, leaving the warehouse. After Anna Adam's death in 1965, the property was purchased by the Theraputic Mattress Comapny and converted to light industry mattress production. Coy Cornelius purchased the property in 1982 following several bank repossessions. |
